After years of research and collaboration...

What is a Surgical assistant?

When we go for surgery, a lot of patients just see the OR staff and think the surgeon is the only one performing the procedure. However, we know that is just not the case. A SA in a licensed, certified healthcare provider that works within a dynamic team of individuals to ensure safe and positive outcomes. Surgical Assistants assist the surgeon in a variety of General Surgery as well as as  Orthopedic, Vascular, Trauma and all service lines the hospital provides. As a surgical resident, you assist the surgeon with all cases and work to provide your patient with satisfactory results. We found that, our students can best be served by completing this program in conduction with their medical studies to help provide a separate career to help transition into the role of primary surgeon.

Current graduates are issued an International Board of Surgeons & Assistants certification that is valid in the US and Canada. Practitioner's are required to submit a signed case log of the previous 24 months of surgical procedures. In addition to a verified surgical log, SA-C's are required to submit 200 hours of continuing medical educational credits and a current BLS and ACLS from AHA for those in CVOR service lines.
